Ideas for the transformation of the area into a new management center
In 1991 AIM, in agreement with the the municipality of Milan, promoted a Ideas Contest, funded by its partners, for the transformation ofGaribaldi Area - Republic, once occupied by the Varesine station.

In fact, at the end of the 50s, with the idea of ​​creating a new management center, the area was freed by moving the railway terminal into the Porta Garibaldi station, leaving a gap never filled.

In the competition they participated63 projects, collected in a volume AIM, expression of as many different ways of understanding the city, among which is selected proposal by Pierluigi Nicolin.

Her idea of ​​a vertical cityand a large green space will subsequently be adopted by the Municipality of Milan as development guideline for what has today become the area of New door.

THEl Competition of ideas for the design of the Garibaldi-Repubblica area is the result of the close collaboration between the Municipal Administration and AIM - Metropolitan Interests Association.
This is the background. The Town Planning Plan foresaw for the Garibaldi-Repubblica area the realization of a competition as a premise to reach the definitive planning and to the subsequent creation of the "financial pole" in this central and strategic area compared to the Milan area, long abandoned and degraded, waiting for some final settlement.
The collaboration offer made by AIM al the municipality of Milan for the launch of the Competition was formalized in an agreement signed by the parties and approved by the City Council; on this basis the AIM, whose members fully funded the Competition, took charge of the entire organization and scientific coordination of the initiative.
The Competition Announcement was published in the Official Gazette of May 31, 1991, after the approval of the Scientific Secretariat, the Municipal Administration, the CNA and the CNI.
