Internet Saloon is a place devoted to the several "new metropolitan elders" living in Milan and province, those over 50s who wish to keep up with the times.
Internet Saloon's partners and activities
Internet Saloon is an idea of AIM - Associazione Interessi Metropolitani, a non-profit organisation which runs the project with the support of four key partners:
Credito Artigiano, HP - Hewlett Packard,
Microsoft Unlimited Potential-CTS and
Telecom Italia providing not only the hardware and software for the school (venue, furniture, PCs, computer programmes, connection to the Internet), but also the financial resources to run the service.
Since October 2nd, 2000, when the Saloon was first opened to the public, to June 2007, course of Internet and computer science of base have been kept beyond 20.000, and over 15.500 seniors have "graduated" and received a diploma of "Internet surfers". Attendance levels have substantially increased over the years, and there are long waiting lists to have access to all of our courses.
How the idea was born
Since 1998, AIM has developed a remarkable expertise in computer literacy programmes through the pilot courses "Internet Grandparents & Grandchildren" (the project, where the tutors were high school students, has been exported to other Italian cities, e.g. Turin, Mantova, Trieste, Udine, Gorizia, Cagliari, Lucca; "Internet Mothers & Children", and finally "Internet for Everybody: students, parents, teachers". Thanks to the generous and enthusiastic support of the above mentioned Partners, AIM has been able to "institutionalise" the courses devoted to senior citizens through the opening of a permanent venue, Internet Saloon.
