Breve Presentazione
 
Milano non è soltanto la città del lavoro e del business, dell'industria e del terziario, della Borsa e della finanza. Milano ha anche altre anime, quelle che non durano un lustro o qualche decennio. Fra queste c'č quella della creatività, mai fine a se stessa, sempre legata alla ricerca del bello e del giusto in un matrimonio assai produttivo fra funzione e estetica.
Da Leonardo in avanti è la cultura poli-tecnica a rappresentare l'identità di Milano, la sua ricerca senza limiti, condotta in libertà e che spesso produce innovazioni, scoperte, sviluppo. Accanto al design e alla moda, c'è lo spettacolo. Dal canto ambrosiano alle feste delle meraviglie per gli Sforza fino all'apertura del Teatro alla Scala, al trionfo dell'opera lirica, con Verdi, che ha contribuito a fare l'Italia. Il Novecento vede l'avvento della nuova fabbrica dell'immaginario, il cinema, con case di produzione assai dinamiche, poi la nascita  della tv e di Carosello che danno il la alla pubblicità, insieme all'avvento dei canali privati.
E poi le musiche di ogni tipo, dai cantautori alle ricerche più avanzate, dai concerti a San Siro alla musica antica nelle chiese. Nel teatro, centrale è l'invenzione del teatro pubblico, il Piccolo Teatro, che da più di sessant'anni è punto di riferimento per i maestri della regia e palestra per un pubblico qualificato, e intorno al quale si č composto un sistema di organismi produttivi di prim'ordine, fino ai teatrini off che continuano  a sbocciare immaginando futuro. Milano è la capitale dello spettacolo in Italia, con le sue luci e ombre, con le sue grandezze e fragilità, con le sue ambizioni e contraddizioni. Sono gli elementi di uno spettacolo di gran classe sul quale il sipario resta aperto tutto l'anno. Questo volume prova a raccontarlo, attraverso una coralità di contributi e di pensieri, itinerari nella storia e la segnalazione dei problemi del presente, le cadute e le prospettive, le carenze e i sogni. Una pluralità di visioni accompagnata da un affascinante racconto per immagini.

 

Milan is not only a city of business, industry, the stock market and finance. It has other moving spirits. Among these is creativity, never for its own sake, but always linked to a search for beautiful and proper things, in a productive marriage between function and aesthetics.
From Leonardo onward it is the "poly-technic" that represents the identity of Milan, its endless research, conducted in freedom and which often produces innovation, discoveries, development. Alongside design and fashion, are the performing arts. From Ambrosian chant to the Sforza's festivals of wonder all the way to the opening of the Teatro alla Scala, to the triumph of lyric opera which helped to built Italy. The twentieth century saw the arrival of that new factory of the imagination, the movies, with dynamic production houses, then the birth of television and of Carosello, which  pushed advertising forward, along with the coming of private television channels.
Not only that, Milan has music of every kind, from pop singers to the most advanced avantgarde, from concerts at San Siro to early music in churches. In the theatre, the invention of the public theatre is central: the Piccolo Teatro, which for more than sixty years has been a point of reference for master directors and a training ground for a discerning public, and around which a system of toplevel productive  bodies has been formed, all the way to the little "off" theatres that continue to produce new ways of looking at the future. Milan is Italy's capital of the performing arts, with its lights and shadows , its greatness and  fragility, with its ambitions and contradictions. These are the elements of a spectacle of the highest level and the curtain is up year round. This volume seeks to tell this story, through a chorus of contributions and thoughts, itineraries through history and an indication of presents problems, decline and forecasts, deficiencies and dreams. A plurality of visions accompanied by a fascinating series of images.
