Milano capitale della salute, non solo su scala nazionale ma addirittura europea.
L'affermazione del titolo è forte, e impegnativa.
Il volume - promosso da AIM - propone una riflessione critica sulla posizione di dominio e di attrazione che Milano esercita in questo settore, a partire dal Quattrocento fino ai giorni nostri, per arrivare a capire se, e a quali condizioni, l'affermazione potrà continuare a essere veritiera.
La salute è una realtà complessa, multiforme, ricca di sfumature. E' difficile da trattare non tanto perché richiede la conoscenza di un gergo tecnico specializzato, quanto perché i suoi confini sono sfumati.
La salute è un intreccio di più elementi: è il risultato dell'insieme delle attività che si svolgono negli ospedali, i luoghi deputati a restituire il bene salute a chi ne è deficitario, e anche del lavoro di ricerca degli scienziati, che raccordandosi con gli ospedali, garantiscono che questi dispensino cure all'avanguardia. Ma non solo: la medicina del Duemila è fortemente tecnologica. E' legata a doppio filo alla capacità produttiva e imprenditoriale dell'industria che fornisce farmaci, dispositivi medici, apparecchi e kit diagnostici, strumenti e reagenti, eccetera. La medicina progredisce grazie ai prodotti di quel mercato che contribuisce essa stessa a sviluppare. La salute oggi è un'attività economica di prim'ordine. Che nello stesso tempo non può prescindere dalle singole persone, i veri destinatari, e dal loro pieno benessere fisico e psichico. Il livello di salute di una città passa dalla qualità delle cure fornite ai suoi abitanti e, ancor di più, dalla quantità di quelle che un governo avveduto avrà saputo risparmiare, grazie a una vera prevenzione. Ma si misura anche dalla qualità di vita assicurata ai bambini e ai vecchi, agli immigrati e agli emarginati. E dalla capacità di valutare il ritorno di ogni investimento in questo settore anche in termini di nuovi progetti di sviluppo, individuali, familiari o lavorativi.
Milano capitale della salute, dunque, se la politica di salute della città sarà all'altezza delle richieste e delle aspettative non solo dei milanesi, ma di tutti coloro che alla metropoli guardano come modello.

This title is a decisive and demanding statement.
The book - promoted by AIM - suggests a critcal overview of Milan's position as a leader and a pole of attractions in this field, form the 15th century until now, in order to understand if, and at what condition, the statement can still be true.
Health care is a complex, multifaceted endeavour, rich in nuances. It is difficult to deal with it, not really because it requires a specialized technical jargon, but rather because its boundaries are extremely blurred.
Health care is a mix of several elements: it stems from all the activity performed in hospitals, the places designed to give health back to those who lack it, and to host the research work of scientists who -  in connection with hospitals - make sure they provide state-of-the-art care. Not only that: medicine in the 21st Century is a higly technological endeavour. It is strictly linked to the production and entrepreneurial skills of industries that provide drugs, medical devices, diagnostic tools, kits and reagents, etc. Medicine progressis thanks to the products of the market that it helps develop. 
Health care today is a prime economic industry. At the same time, it cannot disregard individuals, its true beneficiaries, and their full physical and psychic wellbeing.
The level of health in a city stems from the quality of care available for its residents and, even more so, from the quantity of care that can be saved through careful governance, thanks to real prevention. Also, it measured by the quality of life offered to children and the elderly, to immigrants and the homeless. And by the ability to assess the return of all investments in this industry also in terms of new development projects, be them individual, family - or business - releted.
Milan as the capital of health care, therefor, if the city's health care policy will measure up to the expectations not just of the Milanese, but of all those that look at the metropolis as a role model.
